History of Fort McMurray, Alberta

The area in which Fort McMurray is located, was predominately populated by Cree First Nations people in the late 18th century. This continued until the first European explorer entered the area of the Asthabasca River in search of furs in the year of 1778. The explorers name was Peter Pond. Peter Pond's recorded information intrigued explorer Alexander MacKenzie in 1790 to further research the Oil Sands. Before this time the Cree and the Europeans had already been trading for many years, and this put the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company in rivalry. To further there game Hudson's Bay Company established a post called Fort McMurray in 1870.
